Baxter Peak Hiking

I am considering a mid-September hike but have not yet seriously researched this to see if it's feasible. I understand that all hikes must be dayhikes (no camping allowed on the mountain). Is this true? Can anyone suggest possible routes/trailheads....ect. Are there shutdown dates scheduled this fall? Are there any other restrictions, permits reqd. limits on crew size that I should be aware of?
