Welcome to Mt. Katahdin Baxter State Park Maine

This site has been constructed to aid and assist those individuals who are thinking of visiting this beautiful park  located in Piscataquis county, Maine. The Park offers camping, hiking, fishing, canoeing and many other outdoor summer and winter activities. The famous Appalachian Trail ends in the Park at the parks' highest elevation of just over 5200 ft., atop of Mount Katahdin. The views atop of Mt. Katahdin are spectacular revealing the true natural beauty of Baxter Park and Maine. The Knife's Edge is a trail atop of Mount Katahdin, that is somewhat perilous as its' name justly fits the description of this foot trail. Nearby communities include Millinocket and the Moosehead Lake region. Chamberlain Lake is a lake located at the park. Ripogenus Dam, is nearby and offers cabins to rent in a very remote area. This region of Maine offers wonderful Maine fishing and Maine hunting opportunities and is highly recommended for those thinking of a backwoods vacation in Maine. Local Maine residents line up every year for the opening day of reservations for campsites, early in the winter at the park. Reservations are often sold out on that one single day. Reservations can only be placed in person. The Golden Road is a local name given to a logging road that can take you to extremely remote regions in and around the Park. There is a fee in order to access this road, but it is well worth the fee to see very remote areas.  Because of the remote nature of this road, only automobiles in excellent working order are advised to be used.  A breakdown could mean a long time without assistance, and cell phone reception is poor.
